When going out shopping to pick out furniture for you patio, do not overlook the beauty and simplicity of wood. One of the first and most basic of building materials, it is still the most popular for many reasons.

The Outdoor Wood Table Adds to Mother Nature’s Appeal

You could purchase plastic or metal as the medium for your table, but since you are designing the perfect outdoor space, why not keep with the theme. Plastic can be made to mimic wood, but it just isn’t the same thing. An outdoor wood table is most likely going to blend with the trees, the deck itself, and just be one with the space. Lets the flowers and Mother Nature’s other wonders be your focal point. Let the table enhance that space showing the wonderful result of Mother Nature’s beauty with man’s inspiration.

Maintenance and Care of Your Outdoor Wood Table

It is true, that wood may require a little more care than other materials, but the work you put into it, just makes it all that much more valuable. Outdoor furniture can be made from most any sort of wood, but some woods do better out in the elements than others. You will most likely want to find a hard wood, that isn’t real porous.

The more porous the wood the more likely it is to warp. All wood needs to be treated against moisture. But the more water the wood is able to absorb, the more treatment is needed. And some treatment methods make various stains not take well. Remember too that all stains are not made equal. They can vary widely on how well they work and ease to use.

One of the best things you can do to preserve and maintain your outdoor wood table, is to purchase some good patio furniture covers. This holds true with all the furniture on the patio, and regardless to what it is made of. The covers need to keep water out, and they need to breath, letting air flow through to prevent against mildew and mold.

The Versatility of Your Outdoor Wood Table

If, in time you chose to change the look and feel of your outdoor space, you can do so to your outdoor patio table without having to purchase another one. Wood allows you the ability to strip it down, and choose a new color, totally changing the look of the space. You can’t do that with plastic or metal.

Granted, it is easier to just go buy new. But easier, more often than not, is not the best path to take. Taking the time to get in there and really create the space you want to have is worth more than money. To be able to stand back and say “I did that.” is more reward than running to the store.

If this is something you have never done before it can certainly be overwhelming. Stripping wood is not super easy, and depending on the size and condition of the piece, may take more than a sunny afternoon. If you aren’t sure, find an expert. And I don’t mean Lowes or Home Depot. If you can find a store that finishes furniture. Ask them. They do it for a living, they will know every in and out. Every trick they have learned along the way. They had the best teacher, experience.

By talking to an expert, a real one, you will have a true understanding of the project you are about to undertake. This sort of thing is not for everyone. Don’t be let down if you feel that sort of project is not going to be your cup of tea.

Better to do the research now, both about the refinishing and wood tables in general, to make sure you get the outdoor wood table you want or discover that isn’t right for you. Don’t spend the money on something you won’t be happy with in the long run.
